Zoo Tycoon 2

Zoo Tycoon 2 was the second installment in the Zoo Tycoon series, released November 9, 2004. The game would later be followed by four expansion packs, Endangered Species, African Adventure, Marine Mania, and Extinct Animals; one premium download, the Dino Danger Pack, and two compilations, Zookeeper Collection and Ultimate Collection. The game also received 11 bonus downloads, including five new animals.

The base game consists of 30 exhibit animals, while with all downloads and expansions, the total reaches 131 (20 in ES, 20 in AA, four in DDP, 20 in MM, 32 in EA not counting the four replaced from DDP, and five from bonus downloads).

On top of this, a modding community has existed from the year the game released, following a once-prolific modding community for the first game as well. As of 2026, while the community is not at its peak of activity, several active modding projects remain, forming two or more distinct segments of modding. One branch of modding, popularized by Aurora Designs' Radical Remake focuses on transforming the game in a more realistic and high-definition state. The other branch focuses on making content that matches the art and style of the base game in its original state and expanding the game's capabilities within that framework. Most early mods fall into this style, but its resurgence is largely centered around the modding team The Restorers and their Discord channel. In a similar vein, modder NanoLancensis has made a variety of mods that expand upon lacking areas of the base game as well as making two more vanilla-style remakes of the game, one being Folksy Facelift which radically changed many aspects of the game, and the second being Vanilla-Friendly Fixes which stayed closer to the base game's implementation while making numerous bugfixes and QOL improvements.
